Starting July 1, 2026, the government launched a temporary pilot program called the
Medicare GLP-1 BRIDGE Program. The program is designed to make certain
GLP-1 medications used for weight loss more affordable for eligible Medicare beneficiaries.
The program will run through December 31, 2027.
What medications are included?
The program currently includes:
Foundayo tablets
Wegovy injections and tablets
Zepbound KwikPen
Not every version of these medications is covered. Zepbound vials and single-dose pens are not included.
Who can qualify?
The program is available to certain people who:
Have Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage
Are 18 or older
Are using the medication for weight loss or weight-loss maintenance
Meet the program’s medical requirements
Meet CMS eligibility requirements
A doctor must prescribe the medication, and prior authorization is required before coverage begins.
Cost?
Eligible participants pay $50 for a 28- or 30-day supply.
The $50 payment does not count toward the Medicare Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket maximum because the Bridge Program operates separately from the regular Part D benefit.
Already have GLP-1 coverage?
If your Medicare Part D plan already covers an eligible GLP-1 for a qualifying medical condition, you generally would use your existing coverage instead of the Bridge Program.
How to get started
Talk with your doctor about whether a GLP-1 medication may be right for you. Your doctor can determine whether you meet the medical requirements and submit the required prior authorization.
